Complete question: Based on our observations, determine if the given solutions are either saturated or unsaturated.

1. 500g of flour completely dissolves in 1 liter of water.

2. When another 200 g of flour was added to the solution, the additional flour was not dissolved completely and settled

3. The solutions cannot hold any more solute when added to the solution.

4. One pack of gelatin powder completely dissolved in 400g of water.

5. The milk powder cannot be dissolved anymore in a cup of water.

Answer:

1. This solution of flour and water is unsaturated.

2. This solution of flour and water is saturated.

3. This solution is saturated.

4. This solution of gelatin powder and water is saturated.

5. This solution of milk powder and water is saturated.

  • Saturated solution: A solution is called saturated when the solution contains the maximum amount of solute that is capable of dissolving i.e. the solute reaches its saturation point.
  • Unsaturated solution: A solution is called unsaturated when the solution contains less than the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolved i.e. the solute does not reach its saturation point.
  • 1 ) When 500g of flour is added to water, it dissolves in the water. But we can add more flour which will dissolve in the solution. So, the solute (flour) is less than its saturation point. So, the solution is unsaturated.
  • 2) If we add another 200g of flour to the water, the solution becomes saturated because the solute reaches its saturation point.
  • 3) If a solution cannot hold any more solute when added to the solution, the solution becomes saturated. The solute reaches its saturation point.
  • 4) When one pack of gelatin powder completely dissolves in 400g of water, the solution becomes saturated. More solute (gelatin powder) cannot be dissolved in the solution.
  • 5) When milk powder cannot be dissolved anymore in a cup of water, the solution becomes a saturated solution because no more solute (milk powder) can be dissolved in the solution.
