In the Chapter “THE HUNDRED DRESSES” Wanda a Polish American girl gets bullied by her class mates specially the most popular girl in the school Peggy who invented a senseless ‘dress game’. Wanda was not liked by her pals for having a peculiar name i.e. a long name which Americans generally don’t have. She was discriminated for living in a poor locality ‘Boggins Heights’ where usually Polish immigrants lived. Her faded blue dress which was although clean yet seemed to be unfit on her, was also the subject of humiliation.

Peggy and her bosom friend Madeline later regretted their behaviour and attitude towards Wanda when she left the school and city for good. Though Maddie was never involved in humiliation Wanda but she was a part and never objected her bed friends actions.

If only the students of Room 13 have accepted the difference between their culture, ethnicity, social status and Wanda’s, Wanda Petronski hadn’t left the school and would have got her medal. She would not have to suffer such humiliation for just being herself- a tight lipped Polish girl who liked to ignore their insensitive comments on herself.

Thus, we get to learn a very important message that “Learning to live with differences - culture, regional, religious, social status, etc in indeed the need of hour” as this world is a rainbow where a variety of people live together but they all are humans with hearts and emotions.

“Inability to accepts differences brings trouble for us as well as for others” Peggy and Madeline would not have to go through their guilt stricken state of mind if they haven’t done such insensitive thing towards a simple girl like Wanda who proved herself to be More mature than them by forgiving their deeds.

Answer:

Learning to live with differences indeed the need of hour as this world is a rainbow where a variety of people live together but they all are humans with hearts and emotions. In countries especially like India and Australia where there are numerous groups, cultures and a vast diversity, unity is a very fragile as well as important pillar. Even a small crack can lead to a massive fall. Hence there is a need for all the people to learn and live with differences, if not there will be a trouble for all the people. And this very important message was conveyed by the story ‘THE HUNDRED DRESSES’. In the story, Wanda, a Polish American girl gets bullied by her class mates specially the most popular girl in the school Peggy who invented a senseless ‘dress game’. Wanda was not liked by her pals for having a peculiar name.

Peggy and her bosom friend Madeline later regretted their behavior and attitude towards Wanda when she left the school and city for good, if only the students of Room 13 have accepted the difference between their culture, ethnicity, social status and Wanda’s, Wanda Petronski hadn’t left the school.

Once Bill Gates quoted, “Discrimination has a lot of layers that make it tough for minorities to get a leg up.” Peggy and Madeline would not have to go through their guilt-stricken state of mind if they haven’t done such insensitive thing towards a simple girl like Wanda who proved herself to be More mature than them by forgiving their deeds.
