A Hero’ by R.K. Narayan is a humorous story of a little boy called Swami who has heroism attributed to him out of sheer coincidence. Swami is a 9 year old boy who lives with his parents, grandmother and siblings. His father reads once an essay on the courage of a boy of eight years and thinks that Swami contrasts poorly with the boy who bravely battled a tiger. Swami has the habit of sleeping with his grandmother after listening to a story narrated by her.

That annoys Swami's dad. Then Swami's dad pressure or rather challenges him to sleep in his office. Swami is of course afraid of ghosts, while he sleeps in his father's house. He recollects the various tales of ghosts he's learned from his friends and can't sleep well. At last he sleeps under the bench to make the spot better. But he has nightmares and wakes up with his beginning. At the same time, Swami spots an intruder breaking into the office.

Mistaking him for a ghost Swami seizes the intruder's leg in desperation, self-defence and bites him hard. The intruder finds the suffering unbearable and cries in agony. The house members run into the office and catch the intruders. They all think that Swami's act was a valiant effort to apprehend the thief, and so Swami is greatly admired.. In a number of cases, the police tells Swami that the intruder was wanted and congratulates Swami.

The police inspector even suggests that Swami join the police force when he grows up. Swami is revered by his fellow students and respected by his teachers and headmasters. The short story A Hero tells a kid who is afraid of sleeping alone, but his father is compelled to do so, and a Hero comes out in the end of the day! He could catch a thief and earn everyone's respect, apart from sleeping alone.
