leaves of cactus are reduded to spines.why?

Cactus are found in desert like places where there is a shortage of water . If a plant with leaves are left in sun transpiration takes place and it takes a lot of water. As a reason cactus leaves are changed to spines ie to minimise the loss of water through transpiration. Hope it helps.
