It's true that leaves grow in special patterns to trap sunlight such as if you take example of Banana Leaf it is flattened and dorsal l so that it can trap a large amount of sunlight to prepare for photosynthesis but as we go in desert areas the plants in desert areas don't have any leaves instead of that the leaves are modified into thorns which helps them to decrease the amount of loss in water so that by this it is concluded that leaves of plants modified themselves as their requirement
