 [\left[\begin{array}{ccc}i&j\\a&b\\c&d\end{array}\right] . this is determinant method in which ad - bc is done. i want to know why there is negative sign in between why not positive?

I think it is because + value is ignored or it may not be determined whether it is positive or negative.
