Answer: The nitrogen fixing bacteria reside in the root nodules of the leguminous plants. They convert atmospheric nitrogen into soluble nitrogenous compounds. These nitrogenous compounds make the soil fertile. Hence  a legume crop does not require nitrogenous fertilisers.
