The origin is the optical centre of the lens which we consider. For example if we consider the image formation by the eye piece we shall consider all the distances on the left of eye piece to be negative and right of the eye piece to be positive.
In analysing telescopes we always do it in two steps. First: image formation by the objective and then image formation by the eye piece. When we apply lens equation to the objective lens, we take all the distances left of the objective to be negative and right to be positive. Similarly, when we apply the lens equation to the eye piece we consider eye piece as the origin.
Length of the telescope tube is given by f0 + ue (ue is the object distance for the second lens). Since the length of a telescope is not associated with the concept of rays and its direction, it will be always taken positive.
