Given:

Length of a drawing board is 40 cm and breadth is 30 cm. A 4 cm wide border is left along all four sides and the picture is drawn inside it.

To find:

The area of the border

Solution:

The external dimensions of the drawing board (including the border):

External Length = 40 cm

External Breadth = 30 cm

∴ The area of the external rectangle = length × breadth = 40 × 30 = 1200 cm²

The internal dimensions of the drawing board (excluding the border):

The width of the border = 4 cm

Internal Length = 40 - (2 × 4) cm = 40 - 8 = 32 cm

Internal Breadth = 30 - (2 × 4) cm = 30 - 8 = 22 cm

∴ The area of the internal rectangle = length × breadth = 32 × 22 = 704 cm²

Now,

The area of the border along all 4 sides is,

= [Area with border] - [Area without border]

= 1200 cm² - 704 cm²

= 496 cm²

Thus, the area of the border is → 496 cm².
