let the two equal sides be x and y,

x = y

according to the question,

x² + y² = (5√2)²

x² + x² = (5√2)²        [as x = y]

x² = (5√2)² / 2

x² = 50 / 2

x² = 25

x = √25

x = 5

x = y = 5 = a

area of an isosceles right triangle is 1/2 * a²

==>  1/2 * 5²

==> 1/2 * 25

==> 12.5 cm²
