Answer:

5.1 Introduction

Soils are permeable due to the existence voids through which water can flow

from points of high energy to points of low energy. The study of the flow of

water through permeable soil media is important in soil mechanics.

Hydraulic Gradient

When water flows through a saturated soil mass, there is a certain resistance

to the flow because of the presence of solid matter. However, the laws of fluid

mechanics which are applicable for the flow of fluids through pipes are also

applicable to flow of water through soils. As per Bernoulli's equation, the total

head at any point in water under steady flow condition may be expressed as:

Total head = pressure head + velocity head + elevation headWhere ht = total head,

u = pore water pressure, and w = unit weight of water, the term = hp, (m)

 = velocity, g = acceleration due to gravity, this value is very small = 0

Z = elevation head, (m) = he

ht = hp + he

Elevation head (he): is the vertical distance

from a datum line to the point considered

(above or below a datum plane).

Pressure head (hp): is the height of the

vertical column of water in the piezometer

installed at that point.

Piezometer: is a device used to measure

liquid pressure in a system by measuring

the height to which a column of the liquid

rises against gravity, or a device which

measures the pressure of groundwater at

a specific point.

Total head (ht) = elevation head + pressure

I thik this may help you......
