x: the father’s age today y: the son’s age

“the man is twice as old as his son”: x = 2y

“twelve years ago, he was thrice as old as his son”: x-12 = 3*(y-12)

so 2y-12 = 3*(y-12)

In the end, you find y=24 and x=12, so today the father is 48 years old and his son is 24 years old I hope it helps you
