Answer:

Respiratory centres are found in medulla oblongata and pons. The medulla oblongata is the primary respiratory centre. It sends signals to the muscles involved in breathing. Apart from the respiratory centre, medulla oblongata contains vomiting, cardiac and vasomotor centres.

Chloride shift occurs in a cardiovascular system where chloride ions move into the RBC and bicarbonate moves outside the RBC. This exchange is referred to as chloride shift. The opposite process occurs in pulmonary capillaries in lungs where there is the export of chloride ions from the RBC and import of bicarbonate into the RBC.

RBC of deoxygenated blood is slightly bigger than that of oxygenated blood due to the exchange of oxygen with carbon dioxide in the veins. Increased carbon dioxide causes bicarbonate production in RBC. This, in turn, increases osmotic pressure in deoxygenated blood which causes diffusion of water into the cell making it bigger in size.

Thus, the correct answer is option D.
