Lesch Nyhan disease is an X-linked recessive
disorder that causes neurological damage in human
beings. A survey of 500 mates from a caucasion
population revealed that 20 were effected with this
disorder. What is the frequency of the normal allele
in this population?
(1) 9.6
(2) 0.8
(3) 0.096
(4) 96

Hi friend here is your answer

____________________________________________

Total mates considered for survey = 500

Individuals affected by the disease = 20

Unaffected individuals = 500-20 = 480

According to the Hardy and Weimberg principle

p {}^{2}  + 2pq \:  + q {}^{2}  = 1

Where

p = frequency of the dominant allele

q = Frequency of the recessive allele

Frequency of the recessive allele

q { }^{2}  = 20  \div  500 = 0.04

q = 0.2

We know that

p + q = 1

p = 1- 0.2

p = 0.8

Hence the the frequency of the normal allele is 0.8
