Many crops can be grown with less water - however it is the heat, excess sun light and dryness is what is killing many of the crops.
In my own experiment, except crops like Paddy, Sugarcane, Banana, Greens, and some vegetable; many crops don’t need so much of water.
The water that we are pumping into the agricultural field - 60% of it is actually going waste - drying in winds, drying in Sun light, drying due to heat.
Also the usage of hybrid seeds increases the need for water, because they need fertilizers and those fertilizers need water to be bio-available to plants. Thus it is a vicious cycle - buying hybrid seeds, buying fertilizers, and then pumping more water into the field - all these have made agriculture very expensive.
If we use native /non-hybrid seeds and use only eco-friendly natural /locally made fertilizers with mulching then the costs are very low. Even if the yield is slightly lower in comparison with chemical agriculture, the costs are far low and therefore the farmers are not going to get into Debt and suicides,
