Lesson 1: Heat & Temperature
Heat is a form of energy. The sun produces heat
energy, which keeps the Earth warm and causes
water to evaporate. We burn fuels such as wood,
coal, LPG and kerosene to produce heat energy.
We need heat energy to cook our food, warm
water, run machines and iron our clothes. We also
use electricity as a source of heat in water heaters,
electric heaters, electric kettles, and electric irons.
Some amount of heat energy is produced by friction,
that is, by rubbing two things together. When we
rub our hands together, they become warm.
ntu
Early human thought that heat was a combination
of air and fire. Even around 400 years ago,
scientists thought that heat was an invisible fluid
called caloric because it seemed to flow from one
object to another. We now know that heat is not a
substance, but a form of energy that flows from a
hot object to a cold object.
