Ans. Huge pieces of ice that break off from the ice – covered land and float in the sea are called icebergs. They pose great danger to ships in the sea. This is because only a small portion of the iceberg is seen above the water and most of it is submerged underwater.
3. Describe the wildlife of Greenland.
Ans. Greenland is home to a lot of different species that can withstand the extreme cold.
Among them are musk ox, polar bear, reindeer, arctic fox, humpback whale, walrus, wolf, seal etc.
Several varieties of fishes and sea birds are also found there.
4. What are the main occupations of the Inuit
Ans. Fishing and hunting are the main occupations of the Inuit. Earlier, boats and harpoons were used by them to hunt. However, guns and rifles are used now. Earlier boats called kayaks were used for fishing, which have been replaced by motorboats now.
5. What kind of clothes do most people in Greenland wear?
Ans. Most people of Greenland wear coats and trousers made of animal skin and fur.
Hood-lined jackets with thick fur are worn by men, women and children. They wear long leather boots made of seal skin to keep their feet warm in the snow.
6. How have modern facilities changed the lives of the Inuit?
Ans. The lifestyle of the Inuit has changed now. Many of them now live in towns and have taken up agriculture and sheep rearing. They use motorized sledges called skidoo for transport. They also use motorboats for fishing. Many towns with modern facilities have made their lives better now.
