Nicola and Jacpo were extremely noble in character and were therefore called as true gentlemen. After the sad demise of their father they were mature enough to earn their livelihood by taking up odd jobs. They were strong in character, which teaches to be truthful and honest in life, no matter what the circumstances were. Their love for their sister is also immense, as they took out time form their busy schedule to visit her in that ailing state.
We learn to be responsible from the characters of both the brother. Their dedication towards their family and their responsible character is one to be admired for.

Nicola and Jacopo, though merely boys leave for the reader a very strong message of self-reliance, dignity, and perseverance. Their spirit is not broken by the aftermath of war and they take up the challenge of meeting expenses of the treatment of their sister who is suffering from the tuberculosis of the spine. Though thrown on the streets, they take up different jobs and run errands to make their living. They teach us not to give up in the face of difficulty and keep up the morals and standards no matter what the situation is. Their selflessness is overwhelming and inspires us to emulate them as in this world of despair, they present a ray of hope and keep humanity alive like a sacred flame.
