the value of b is positive 1 and that of a is negative 1

kvnmurty: 36 = 24 * 1 + 12 .... => ... 24 = 12 * 2 + 0.... Hence... 12 is HCF.

kvnmurty: 12 = 36 - 24 .... so a = -1 and b = 1
