स्कॉटलैंड के किंग जेम्स द्वितीय से गोल्फ शब्द आता है, जिसने 1457 में गोल्फ के खेल पर प्रतिबंध जारी किया था।
1757 के बाद फिर गोल्फ को आसानी से स्कॉटलैंड में खेला जाने लगा।
The sport of golf was played for the first time in the island nation of Scotland. It traces its origins back to the 15th century, when Scottish aristocrats invented a game which involved putting a ball into a small hole or cup.
Golf is generally played in the 18-hole version, although the 9-hole game is used for recreational purposes. The first 18-hole game was played at the Old Course Field in St. Andrews, Scotland.
At the elite level, stroke-play i.e. least number of shots to put the ball into the hole is used as the winning criterion.
