answer:1.The Problems associated with the periodisation given by James Mill are-:

1) In his periodisation James Mill felt that only British rule could civilize India and only British

rule represented all the forces of progress and civilization. The period before the British rule is

the period of Darkness. This notion of history is not acceptable in today’s time.

2) Th division given by Mill is again problematic because prior to British rulers many Hindu and

Muslim despots ruled India but it is wrong to consider an era as per the religion of ruler

because there were many other faiths which existed simultaneously.

3) If we are considering an era as per the religion of the ruler then this means that lives and

practices of other culture and practices do not matter.

4) We also need to remember that the rulers of ancient India also did not share the same faith.

2. 1) The British believed that the act of writing was important.

2) Every instruction, plan, policy, decision, agreement, investigation had to be properly written

up. Once this was done things could be properly studies and debated.

3) This conviction produced an administrative culture of memos, noting and reports.

4)The British also felt that all important documents and letters needed to be carefully preserved, so

they set record rooms attached to all administrative institutions.

5) Specialised institutions like archives and museums were also established to preserve important
