When converted into indirect the sentence becomes past and and the sentence will follow 'question word+subject+verb+object' form[only while reporting question] . Thus 'are' gets converted into 'were' and 'we' becomes 'they'.

2) This sentence is also introgative. Then 'will' converts to 'would'. 'The result' is the subject.

We use if or whether only the question is yes/no question. Here the question is wh question so we don't use any other words.
