Once upon a time there lived three billy goats on one side of the mountain. They decided to
go up to the other side of the mountain to eat the sweet grass growing there. There was a big
bridge between the two sides of the mountain.

A big cruel troll lived under the bridge. His eyes were as big as dinner plates
and his nose, as long as a poker.
The youngest billy goat was the first one to cross the big bridge. As it was crossing
the bridge, the troll asked in a grumpy voice, “Who is walking over my bridge?"
"Oh, it is the small billy goat Gruff. I'm going to the other side to eat grass,"
answered the billy goat in a tender and timid voice.

The troll said, "You cannot go because I will eat you now."
"Oh, no! Please don't eat me. I'm so little," answered the billy goat. "You can eat the second
billy goat-he's bigger."
The troll let the small and thin billy goat go. He patiently waited for the second billy goat.
Soon enough the second billy goat came trotting to the bridge.
The troll growled, "Who is walking over my bridge?"
"It is I, the second billy goat. I am going to eat the yummy grass on the other side," said the billy
goat in a polite and friendly voice.
"You certainly are big! You will go nowhere because I will eat you now," exclaimed the troll
rubbing his hungry belly.
"Oh, I think you should wait some more and eat the third billy goat," said the second billy
goat. "I look big and fat but I am neither tasty nor healthy. The third billy goat is bigger,
fatter and he is fit and healthy. He will surely be delicious!”
The troll thought that it would be smart to eat the third billy goat and so he waited some more.
The third billy goat did not keep him waiting for long.
When the troll heard hoof sounds he opened his watering mouth and let out a thundering
par. "Who is so brave as to walk on my bridge?"
he third billy goat found the question amusing. "The third billy goat is strong and courageous,"
e third billy goat hollered back. "Who is foolish enough to question him?"
e troll was upset when he heard the third billy goat's confident reply. He jumped out from
der the bridge and landed in front of the billy goat in a threatening pose. But lo! The third
y goat was not only a lot bigger than the second billy goat, he was also bigger than the troll.​
