Let’s say that I want to get my mixture to a certain pH but I add too much water to my solution. Can I just add the same volume of my substance as the water I added back into the mixture to get my initial pH? Why/ why not?

No, you cannot add the same volume of your substance as the water you added back into the mixture to get your initial pH.

- Since you wanted a certain pH, you have to add the calculated amount of your substance.

- Normal water has a pH of 7.

- If you have added it more, then either it has increased the pH or decreased the pH.

- So, you have to calculate the amount of your substance to be added to get the desired pH.

- This is because the substance has a pH different than that of the water.

- If you will add the same amount of it, then the pH will not be different.
