Given   Let speed of the stream be x km/hr.

speed of the motorboat  in still water  = 20 km/hr

To Find :   speed of the motorboat in upstream will be

A) 20km/hr

B) (20 + x)km/hr

C) (20 – x )km/hr

D) 2km/hr

Solution:

upstream means going against stream hence stream velocity is opposite to motor boat

Hence motor boat speed  in upstream =       speed of the motorboat  in still water  -  speed of stream

= 20 - x    km/hr

(20 – x )km/hr   is correct option

speed of the motorboat in upstream = (20 – x )km/hr

Additional info:

Down stream means , going into the direction of stream hence stream speed will be added

Hence motor boat speed  in downstream =       speed of the motorboat  in still water  +  speed of stream

= 20+  x    km/hr
