area of sq.earlier =8cm sq.
side=3cm
a/q
side=3-1=2cm
area=(2)^2=4cm sq.

Let the side of the square be a
 {a}^{2}  = 9 \\
a = 3
the \: new \: side \: a \:  - 1 = 2
the \: area \: of \: new \: square \:  \\ is \: 4 {cm}^{2}
