SOLUTION

GIVEN

Let the players who play cricket be 12, the ones who play football 10, those who play only cricket are 6

There is a total of 16 players

TO DETERMINE

The number of players who play only football

EVALUATION

Let

C : The set of players who play cricket

F : The set of players who play football

So by the given condition

n(C) = 12 , n(F) = 10 , n(only C) = 6

Thus we have

n( C ∩ F )

= n(C) - n( only C )

= 12 - 6

= 6

Hence the number of players who play only football

= n(F) - n( C ∩ F )

= 10 - 6

= 4

Venn Diagram : From Venn diagram we also see that the number of players who play only football is 4
