In the seventeenth century, there lived a spiritual teacher called Tetsugen in Japan.
Tetsugen's dream was to print a woodcut edition of the complete Chinese
Buddhist stras (scriptures) in Japan. Undertaking such a project was both
challenging and expensive because it would involve making around 60,000 wooden
blocks for printing. Since Tetsugen was a spiritual teacher, he had neither personal
wealth, nor the means to earn. But he was an eloquent speaker, so he decided
he would travel across the country, speak to people, and ask them to contribute
towards his project.
While on his travels, he sometimes met wealthy people who would offer gold and
silver, bur che vast majority of the contributions he collected were small sums of
money from villages where farmers could only afford a few small coins. Tetsugen
accepted each contribution with humble gratitude.
"I will not regard ten thousand kan (of rice) as too much, nor one grain of rice as
too little, he wrote, 'Whatever people can offer, I will accept and go on begging...
One story describes how, on a bitterly cold day, Tetsugen called out to a samurai
who went by, but he did not respond. So Tetsugen followed him on foot to the next
village which was ten kilometres away. There, he once again asked politely for a small
onarion. Wanting to be rid of the man who was following him so determinedly, the
amurai tossed him a small coin. Tetsugen accepted this offering as if it were a large
easure. Tetsugen's gratitude deeply moved the samurai as well as the villagers who
