SOLUTION

GIVEN

The distance of the point (-4,y) from origin is 5 units

TO DETERMINE

The value of y

EVALUATION

Here the distance of the point (-4,y) from origin (0,0) i

 \sf{ =  \sqrt{ {( - 4 - 0)}^{2}  +  {(y - 0)}^{2} } }

 \sf{ =   \sqrt{16 +  {y}^{2} } }

Now it is given that The distance of the point (-4,y) from origin is 5 units

 \therefore \:  \:  \sf{   \sqrt{16 +  {y}^{2} } = 5 }

Squaring both sides we get

 \sf{16 +  {y}^{2} =  {5}^{2}  }

 \sf{ \implies \:  16 + {y}^{2} =  25 }

 \sf{ \implies \:   {y}^{2} =  25 - 16 }

 \sf{ \implies \:   {y}^{2} =  9 }

 \sf{ \implies \:   y =  \pm \: 3 }

Hence the required value is

 \sf{y =  \pm \: 3}

And the required points are ( - 4, 3), ( - 4, - 3)
