If I take this question as simply as it seems, soil pollution is just like any other form of pollution (air, water) but is merely related to the ground. For example, people spill gas/pertol all the time at these filling stations and the result is pollution runoff that enters the soil. You can sample the soil in different locations and different depths, test the samples, and easily create a three dimensional portrait of a gasoline plume, expanding outward and downward to x-and-such depths depending upon the porosity of the soil and rock below.
