Letter on a visit to Durgiana temple:

6 December 2019

Dearest Anjana ,

Hope this letter finds you and your family in good health and spirit. How is your studies going on? Must be preparing hard for the upcoming half-yearly exams. Over here I am too doing well and also busy with my exam preparation. I have been wanting to write to you for long, especially about my recent visit to the Durgiana Temple in Amritsar. The school had organised a week’s trip to Amritsar as a part of the yearly all girls trekking and adventure club and this year we had been to Amritsar. I must it was a splendid place and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We visited many places but my most favourite was the Durgiana Temple there.

Devoted to Goddess Durga, the Durgiana Temples is called as a Hindu version of the famous Golden Temple. The temple is also referred to as Durga Tirath, Sitla Mandir, and Lakshmi Narayan Temple. Besides Goddess Durga who is the main deity here, the temple also worships and has the deities of Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi. The temple is built in the centre of a sacred lake, and the architecture of this beautiful temple bear a resemblance to that of the Golden Temple. Marble has been used expansively in the temple's structures. The canopies and dome of the temple also bear a resemblance to the Golden Temple. It is quite interesting to know that the temple is affectionately referred to as the Silver Temple because of its beautifully etched silver doors. You also get to several Hindu scriptures engraved on the main temple’s interiors. The temple complex also has other temples such as the Bara Hanuman Temple and Sita Mata Temple. Most of the Hindu festivals such as Janmashtami, Dussehra, Ram Navami and Diwali are celebrated here. Each day bhajans are sung by the devotees, immediately after the temple opens in the morning as well as before it closes in the evening. This temple is a sure-visit attraction of Amritsar.

Apart from the Durgiana Temple, we had also visited other attractions which included Kaiser Bagh, Wagah Border and even happened to see 'Beating the Retreat' ceremony which takes place each, then we visited the Bathinda Fort, Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh Public Park Memorial, the Partition Museum and also some famous market places where I did a lot of shopping! If you happen to plan a visit to Punjab, you must visit Amritsar as the city is regarded a holy city since it is believed that Lord Rama had visited this land. And you must definitely include Durgiana Temple in your itinerary.

Well, I must go for now…Will write again. Do reply soon. Regards to all at home. Keep in touch

Warm regards

Kamya
