Open Letter to the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modion Swachh Bharath Abhiyan
07 November 2015
Dear Prime Minister,
The efforts put towards keeping our country clean with the Swachh BharathAbhiyan is really commendable. It has created a massive awareness amongpeople from every section of society. And I see some real efforts to keep thecities and villages clean. The additional 0.5% cess on services is a welcomedecision as it provides financial support for the initiatives to keep ourcountry cleaner. In this regard, I would like to draw your attention towards one of the
basicsanitary requirements - Public Toilets -
to keep our cities and villagesclean. I am sure that you already have this in your agenda, however thoughtof bringing it to your notice.Even though we have advanced in the technology and modernization is atthe peak, we still lack the basic sanitary facilities in public places. Westruggle to find a public toilet, when we are out of house. Most of the placeswe do not have or they are locked. Even if one finds there is no ownership tokeep the toilet clean. The charge that is collected to use the toilet is no lessthan Rs.5. This is one of the key reasons behind dirtier public places like busstops, railway stations, city markets, foot paths
as people don’t have an
alternative.I live in Bangalore, which is known as Silicon Valley of India, a major hub forinformation technology companies. However if one goes out of house, willstruggle to find a toilet in public places. There are lakhs of people movingaround in the city for their daily living. Places like Mejistic, K R Market,Shivaji Nagar, Indiranagar, M.G. Road, Yeswantpur, Madiwala are the mostcrowded ones. Although we have public toilets in some places, they are sodirty that people do not feel like using them and more over there is a chargefor usage.

It is not that the people are unwilling to keep the city clean but they do nothave an option. The most affected with this are the ladies and old people. Imyself have straggled a lot from this when I am out of my house. I had tosearch for a restaurant which has a rest room and have tea or snacks for thesake of availing toilet facilities. This is an expensive/time consuming optionwhich most of the people cannot afford. If the public toilets are available in usable conditions without any charges, people will be encouraged to use it, making the public place cleaner. Nowthe Government has formal funding from 0.5% cess on Services for SwachhBharat, I would humbly request you to include
“Public Sanitary Facilitiesfor Cleaner India”
as one of the initiatives. I hope to see atleast a fewclean toilets in bus stops, railway stations, markets and other crowdedplaces to make our cities and villages cleaner.I am writing this to you as I am a true admirer of your leadership, functioning and development agenda. I truly believe that your tireless effortswill make India a great place to live.
Thank YouYours Truly,Sowmya K. Prabhu
