I am shocked that the two oldest trees in Ames are about to be cut down just because they are in the way. It is difficult to accept that there are no other options for where to build an ISU dorm. Besides, there are already new buildings going up that will serve this need for more student housing.

These trees are not damaged or decayed. They are worth much more than the monetary value indicated in the Des Moines Register's March 31 article. Our society is too involved in a throwaway lifestyle. We should keep these trees, place informative plaques near them and help guide future generations to revere and appreciate the uniqueness and historical significance of these outstanding survivors. Even if some larger trees are planted to replace them, nothing will achieve this size and magnificence before the great-grandchildren of today's students are on campus.
