Answer:

Dear Bapu,

You are the great soul Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. Your philosophy of truth and non-violence that paved the way for the freedom from the British rule.

I learned that you were born on October 2, 1869. Your birth anniversary, Gandhi Jayanti, is celebrated on October 2 as a national event across India. This day is observed across the entire world as the International Day of Non-violence.

You contributed significantly to the struggle for freedom against the British. But this is only one of your many achievements. You were a strong opponent of discrimination on the basis of race, caste, skin color and religion. Your vision of equality inspired people across the world to raise their voice against any kind of discrimination.

You once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." This shows your selfless sacrifice for the people of India.

Your non-violence and satyagraha policy lead India to achieve Independence without shedding a drop of blood.

You believed in simple living and used to wear traditional Indian cotton dhoti and a shawl. You were such a humble human being.

You shocked the British in 1930 with the Dandi Salt March, 440 km long walk on foot to the ocean. This was your challenge to the injustice of the salt tax.

You believed that all human beings are God’s special people and must be treated equally irrespective of their caste, color, language, creed, region, and religion. You campaigned for the empowerment of the lower caste of the Untouchables- whom you called Harijans, the children of God.

In 1942, you urged Indians to stop cooperating with the British and called for Quit India movement. The story of India’s struggle for Independence was long and many people sacrificed their lives during the process. Finally, India achieved freedom in August, 1947. Thank you Bapu for your sacrifice and inspiration.

Bapu, you were a great writer too. Some of the books you wrote were (1) An Autobiography- The Story of My Experiments with Truth (2)Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule and (3) Key to Health.

Dear Babu, you are immortal. You will always be remembered for your selfless love for the country and her citizens, your humility, your truth and non-violence, and for your tireless efforts to remove discrimination from every corner of our Motherland.
