Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my opinions towards social networking sites. They has become prevalent among youngsters. According to a survey conducted by a youth centre, youngsters has spent more than two hours per day visiting the social networking sites. Owing to their popularity, this has gained a new light and arounsed a lot of controversy as some people claim that there are many disadvantages using these sites. Therefore, I am going to explore the attractions and drawbacks of spending a lot of time on these sites.
Firstly, teenagers are attracted by social networking sites as they can provide the latest status of their friends. Take Facebook for example, people can upload photos and share things about themselves. Therefore, teenagers can easily reach the information of their friends and get along with them. This can also encourage teenagers to form an intimate relationship with their friends.
Secondly, teenagers are enticed by these sites as they can provide a range of current affairs and comments regarding them. As rarely have teenagers had the habit of reading newspaper, they do not know much about the society. Yet, the social networking sites provide much news and many interesting comics about the news, teenagers would find that it is intriguing to read things around the globe and become more enthusiastic towards the community. For instance, the establishment of national education promoted a wave of discontent and came into spotlight a few months ago. Teenagers are very interested in it because the social networking sites kept sharing the news. Ultimately, they can have a deeper explorations to the news.
Thirdly, these sites greatly provide channels for youngsters to meet friends with mutual interest as these sites contain chatting room and message function. Therefore, teenagers will find that the sites are attracting as they can meet more friends from diverse regions.
From the above, it is obvious, if not conspicuous, to see the attractions of visiting social networking sites. Nonetheless, there are several drawbacks when teenagers spend a lot of time on them.
Teenagers will easily get addicted when they spend exorbitant time on these sites. This may make teens become less concentrate on their studies. Thus, their academic results will be severely affected. What’s more, addiction to these sites may pose a threat to teenagers’health as they keep looking at the screen of computers and phones for a long period of time. This may cause youngsters to be short-sighted and become fatigue easily,
One of the potential dangers that youngsters would encounter is that they may be deceived by others intentionally. It is no doubt that news regarding friends on the Internet has been skyrocketing. As it is difficult to differentiate good people and the bad ones in the virtual world, teens may be deceived by others easily.
It is so alarming that social networking sites contain some disadvantages. Needless to say, it is high time that teenagers should highly pay attention on them and do not spend too much time on them. Teenagers should clearly allocate their time of surfing these sites in order to avoid addition. More importantly, schools should teach youngsters about the advantages and detrimental effects of visiting these sites. So, teenagers can learn how to surf these sites wisely. To conclude, the concerted efforts between teenagers and teachers to fight against addiction of social networking sites are very crucial. If teenagers devote themselves into learning the impacts of surfing these sites, then the hazards of using these sites can be avoided easily.
