Letter to editor informing about landslide

To the editor:
Due to the natural occurrence of some low stability soils in the area of West Mary Street and Lansing Elementary School, a slope failure (landslide) occurred last summer. The slide has continued to grow with each substantial rainfall event. So far, the slide has encroached on the elementary school staff parking lot, seriously threatened to break LanDel's water main and undermined the West Mary Street Trail, requiring its closure.
With spring rains on the way, the challenge facing the Lansing community is to contract for stabilization of the area before it further damages school property, destroys LanDel's water main and undermines and requires closure of West Mary Street.
The opportunity presented is for the city, the school district and the water district to demonstrate through shared funding of this essential stabilization construction, that the long and remarkable legacy of close cooperation and coordination between these entities is still at work for the benefit of the whole community. Each of the three public entities has the preservation of significant and costly infrastructure at stake. Hopefully their respective staffs will follow in the footsteps of the previous administrators and managers who consistently negotiated and brokered equitable shared funding arrangements acceptable to their respective elected bodies.
