Waterlogging misery on roads
Dear Sir,
It was a bit odd to see parts of many streets in Doha being waterlogged just after a few hours of intermittent rains a few days ago. This shows a major problem with the drainage system in the city. Doha gets rains like this only for a day or two in a year. But even then the city could not cope with it. The situation was especially bad on the roads below some flyovers. Many drivers had to abandon their cars after being stranded in pools of water.
Waterlogging refers to the saturation of soil with water. When new roads are being built, especially in low-lying areas, it is important that a proper drainage system is put in place so that water is quickly drained in case of rain.
In a desert country like Qatar, it is incongruous to see flooded roads after a spell of rain. One hopes Ashghal, Qatar’s Public Works Authority, will have learnt a lesson from the flooding and adopt new practices to prevent such problems in future.

Subject: Waterlogging in main market and risk of water borne diseases.
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed national newspaper, I would like to express my concern on the problem of water logging in the main market region of Vasundhara Enclave.
The main problem lies in building houses without planning. During the unsupervised construction of buildings the drains and culverts are encroached or even covered up completely. This is human greed with no civic sense.
With no big or proper outlets, even a normal rainfall results in heavy waterlogging disrupting human movement and destroying essential commodities.
Therefore, it is extremely necessary for the authorities to survey the area for a long term and pragmatic solution.
Yours sincerely,
NIRMALA
