Dear Sumesh:
I hope this letter of mine finds you in great health and sparing spirits. Well, in your earlier letter you had asked me the difference between traditional method of schooling and modern method of schooling. I am going to explain the same briefly.
Traditional method of schooling was teacher dominated. Children used to study at Gurukuls. The subjects such as reading, writing, grammar, reasoning, critical thinking, arithmetic along with the values of self-discipline, religious training. Since the technology and sciences had not developed so much, the much stress was on theoretical subjects. Even the educational infrastructure was also of just rudimentary type.
On the other hand modern method of schooling are quite scientific. They are student-centered. The infrastructure is much more advanced. Technology plays a key role in making the learning more effective and productive. Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are given lots of importance along with academics. I don’t need to explain much about the modern method of schooling as you are gaining education through this method. I am winding up now. Give regards to uncle and aunt.
Yours affectionately,

My dear Kirti
How are you? Hope you are enjoying good health and prosperity. Recently I joined work as a teacher in a school. Since you have been in the teaching profession for the past five years I would like to discuss about the different methods of schooling.
Many changes have taken place in society. There has been an advancement in science and technology. The methods of schooling have also undergone a lot of change. The traditional method of teaching which can also be described as the 'chalk and talk' method has lost its importance. Modern methods of teaching are being adopted in the present.
The teacher plays an important role in the traditional method of teaching. Students learn through memorization and recitation. This method does not enhance critical thinking, decision making and problem solving skills.
The modern or constructivist approach to teaching involves inquiry learning, interactive learning and hands-on activities. These activities require talking, listening and movement which activate multiple areas of the brain.
So on the whole the traditional method is teacher centred while in the modern method is child centred. I think the modern method is more suitable for the present times. It can help in the all round development of the child so that he can be fit for the modern dynamic society.
Do let me know your views about the different methods of schooling.
With lots of love
Your friend
