Sir — The protests against Delhi University’s cut-off marks for admission are not uncalled for (“College shortage behind high cut-offs”, June 17). Expecting students to score no less than full marks to gain admission to colleges and universities is extremely unfair. This leads to academic excellence falling prey to rigid administrative norms. This will only discourage young learners. I wonder how many illustrious teachers at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Calcutta University or even Harvard and Oxford scored 100 per cent in their examinations. West Bengal’s higher education minister, Bratya Basu, has said that all the students in the districts of the state should be able to gain admission to their respective district colleges. This is commendable, considering the plight of the students who have applied to the colleges under Delhi University. It is well known that a limited number of seats, along with irrational admission requirements, leads to the administrations of colleges accepting bribes in the name of donations.
