Sub: Rash driving and safety measures
Sir:
I am writing to your esteemed self to express my deep concern over the alarmingly increasing rash driving cases on the roads of our city, leading to countless accidents every day. Road Accident Statistics India has confirmed 1214 road accidents every day in India. 20 children in the age group 3 to 14 lose their lives every day due to these accidents.
The number of cars and other vehicles has been constantly on the rise. The recent survey on maximum number of car ownership has confirmed the maximum number of cars and bikes in our city. The most worry causing aspect is the parents allowing their minor and immature children to drive high-end vehicles on roads. They do maximum accidents.
Apart from this, the traffic police appear to be lazily indifferent to the problem of road rage. Often the jumping of red lights is condoned. Even after being caught red handed the culprits are not punished because of their political connections. If immediate counter measures are not taken, the city roads will become veritable killer roads.
The traffic police must act proactively. There should be strict actions against minors and all those who are involved in reckless driving. The parents must also be cautious in allowing their minor children to drive on roads. I appeal to the concerned authorities through the medium of your esteemed columns to look into the issue and do the needful.
Yours truly,
Lalit

Subject: Reckless driving endangering precious human life.
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the traffic authorities and the general public on the issue of reckless driving which causes accidents and results in injuries and lost of life.
There are clear traffic rules which prohibit overspeeding, driving on the wrong lane, parking in no parking zones, bikers without helmet, car drivers without driving license, driving without seat belts, driving under influence of intoxicants, etc and also we defined penalties for defaulters. But some drivers give no regards for the rules and regulations. Overspeeding and ignoring traffic lights are normal to them. They drive under the influence of alcohol. There are several hit and run cases everyday. Reckless drivers hit other vehicles or people walking on foot and fled the scene with the victims bleeding, screaming in pain and calling for help. Those whose driving exceed the speed limits must be given an exemplary punishment. What do these rash drivers wanted to prove when any sane person can tell that the consequences of rash driving are always destructive?
Maybe we need to review the penalties imposed upon people for rash driving. Imposing heavier penalties on offenders is the need of the hour. A rash driver involved in hit and run should be fined along with appropriate imprisonment time.
Our traffic control personnel must be increased. Both population and vehicle users are growing rapidly but the number of traffic police has not has more or less remained the same. It is also necessary to introduce road safety lessons in the text books of schools and colleges. Students must be taught the necessity of safe driving and learn to honour the sanctity of human life. Further, no driving license should be issued to anyone until they have passed from driving schools with satisfactory performance.
"Speed thrills but kills." Reckless and irresponsible driving endangers the life of the driver as well as other drivers and pedestrians. It is better to drive safely then to regret later.
Yours sincerely,
HEMANT
