Encourage all children to take as much science and math classes in school as they can. Chemistry, physics and math beyond arithmetic are especially important. It will help them understand many other things in the world beyond science.
It will help prevent them from being fooled as they become adults. They'll be more likely to see past scams. It teaches them not what to think, but how to think. It's much as athletes, such as Serena Williams, Jim Thorpe or Tom Brady, exercise their bodies so they can perform well.
(Algebra is not hard, it's just different. We use it every day without realizing it! For example, a pair of shoes I want costs $80. I have only $60. How much more will I need? In algebra, we call "how much more will I need" the letter "x." X is $20. You knew that.)
Another good experience is taking even one year of another language. It teaches us that others aren't so different that we have to kill them. They just have different words for the same things.
For example, from my ninth-grade Spanish, I remember that "Buenos Dias" is "good day" or "good morning." "Gracias" is "thanks" or "thank you." In Ojibwe, "thanks" is "miigwech" (pronounced "me gwetch").
It's usually expected that many conservatives will oppose this, of course, and liberals will support it. But it's much more important than any politics, whether nutty or pinko. We want the best for our children, don't we?
