Letter typing is of two types-formal and informal.
If you are writing to your friend,a relative or someone personally acquainted with you,you need not use formal letters and you can speak elaborately to the reader. For example,it is absurd to use words like 'obliged' in informal letters.
If you are writing to someone you do not know personally, like the headmaster of a school or a doctor seeking a visit, you always need to stick firmly to addressing the reader politely and staying to the point. You need to address the reader politely and with proper salutation depending on how their status is compared to you.For example, you should use the salutation 'Respected' while writing to your boss and 'Dear' if the letter is for a subordinate.
