Answer:

Dear Bapu,

You left this world or rather you were mercilessly snatched from us years ago, even before my father was born. Obviously, I never saw or met you. But my grandfather who had seen and heard you a couple of times would often talk about you. We would try to imagine you with the description he provided. “Woh patle duble the lekin bahut tez chalte the (He was lean and thin but walked briskly),” my grandfather would inform. “But don’t get misled by his frail frame. He was a man of steely determination.”

Today’s generation, brought up on countless tales about you told through books, cartoons, movies, music, documentaries, and God knows what else, relate with you also through the cheeky chant: “Bande mein tha dum, Vande Matram.” This October 2 you would have turned 150.

Dear Bapu:

I hope this letter finds you doing good deeds as you always did when you were on Earth. Your life has been an inspiration not only for Indians, but for people from all other countries as well. By doing great deeds your life has become immortal. As long as there is life on this planet, not only Indians, but the people of the world will remember your greatness. You are an epitome of many virtues, self-less actions, and peace-spreading thoughts. No wonder you are called Mahatma (The Great Soul) by the entire world. People are born; people die. But some people after they are gone leave behind them a trail of light that illumines the path for the striving followers. Longfellow has praised such people in his poem, 'A Psalm of Life'. He says:

" And, departing, leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time;"

The above written lines aptly describe the sublimity of your life. You were a great soul whose philosophy and ideology influenced the world considerably. You practiced non-violence and tried to resist all opposition spiritually. You believed in overcoming fear, dependence on others through self-reliance and self- industry. You successfully resisted the British injustice, aggression, oppression using non-violence and satayagreh. Ultimately you succeeded in winning Independence from the British.  Your philosophy and ideology were adopted by many great leaders of the world. Leo Tolstoy, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, etc, successfully adopted and practiced his teachings. The world acknowledges your contributions to mankind even in modern times.

Your ideology is universal which is relevant for all times. People know very little about your subtly powerful and pragmatic ideology. If your ideology were not effective, the world would not have accorded you the title of Mahatma. Your ideology is admired throughout the world for its universal and spiritual appeal. Its relevance in the contemporary turbulent times is more than it was in the past.

If your famous ideology of non-violence is practiced by each individual, state, and country in the world, conflicts, wars, violence, etc will be wiped from the face of the earth. People will live in a securer and happier world!

Similarly, your ideology on vegetarianism, truthfulness, self-government, self-reliance, observing silence, cleanliness, etc, holds solutions to almost all the problems afflicting people in the modern times. If put into practice, they have the power to enable the modern man enjoy life holistically. There is inspiration and wisdom in everything you did and taught. Bapu you have really become immortal. Thanks for being the inspiration of the world.

Yours devotedly,

Malavika
