Today is the celebration of Earth Day. The first celebration was held in 1970, when Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin organized a teach-in on environmental issues after a disastrous oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1969. His efforts prompted an enthusiastic response from 20 million people across the United States by April 20, 1970. As it turned out, the people spoke out not only against oil spills, but toxic dumps, use of pesticides, raw sewage contamination and the loss of wilderness areas.
In 1990, Earth Day went global, and in 2000, the United Nations approved the Earth Charter. This Charter is made up of principles prompting the world community to take responsibility for planet earth.
As people of faith: Jews, Muslims and Christians, we share a common story from Genesis which grounds our actions for the care of the environment in our belief that all of creation is sacred and is ours to steward and pass on to the next generation.
Ways we can be involved are:
1. Promote understanding of environmental issues, and the critical actions needed to protect our planet.
2. Commit ourselves to service not only on Earth Day, but every day to make Sioux Falls and the surrounding area healthier; and, to find means to preserve our land, water, air and other natural resources for future generations.
HOPE IT HELPS!
