From the first condition,

x+y=31

x=31- y.....(1)

From the second condition,

xy=240

(31- y)y=240.... (from 1)

31y-y^2=240

y^2-31y+240=0

y^2-16y-15y+240=0

y(y-16)-15(y-16)=0

(y-16)(y-15)=0

(y-16)=0 or (y-15)=0

y=16 or y=15

If y=16

x=31-y

=31-16

=15

If y=15

x=31-y

=31-15

=16
