Step-by-step explanation:

Given Liam is setting up folding chairs for a meeting. If he arranges the chairs in 7 rows of the same length, he has 9 chairs left over. If he arranges the chairs in 5 rows of that same length, he has 23 left over. How many chairs does Liam have?

  • So let the number of chairs in 7 rows and 9 chairs left over be represented by
  •     7m + 9  (m is number of chairs in each row)
  • So let the number of chairs in 5 rows and 23 chairs left over be represented by
  •     5m + 23
  • So the total number of chairs is same and the equation will be
  •                                     7m + 9 = 5m + 23
  •                                   7m – 5m = 23 – 9
  •                                        2m = 14
  •                                        Or m = 14/2
  •                                        Or m = 7
  • Therefore the total number of chairs will be
  •                                     7m + 9
  •                                     7(7) + 9
  •                                       49 + 9
  •                                        58
  •                   Or 5m + 23
  •                       5(7) + 23
  •                        35 + 23
  •                           58
  •  So Liam wil have 58 chairs.
