Liam works at a zoo. He was looking at some data showing the masses of their 5 African elephants. The mean mass of the elephants was 3,800 kilograms, African elephants. The mean mass of the elephants was 3,600 kilograms The heaviest elephant, named Omar, was recorded as 6,000 kilograms.
Liam then found out that Omar's mass was written down incorrectly, and that Omar actually has a mass of 7,000 kilograms
How will increasing Omar's mass affect the mean and median?

Given:  5 Elephant  , Mean Mass = 3800  , Median Mass = 3600 . heaviest elephant, named Omar, was recorded as 6,000 kilograms whicle actually omar was 7000 kg.

To Find : How will increasing Omar's mass affect the mean and median

Solution:

Elephant = 5

Median Mass = 3600 kg

hence in order mass of 3rd elephant = 3600 kg

Now 6000 kg mass removed which is higher than 3600 kg

& 7000 kg mass added which is also greater than 3600 kg

Hence no impact on order of Weight for 3600 kg

Hence median Remains same as 3600 kg

No impact on Median

Mean = 3800 kg

Elephants = 5

Total Weight = 3800 * 5  = 19000 kg

Now 6000 kg reduced and 7000 kg addes

Hence total Mass = 19000 - 6000 + 7000 = 20000 kg

New Mean = 20000/5  = 4000 kg

Mean increased by = 4000 - 38000 = 200 kg

increasing Omar's mass affect the mean to be incrased by 200 but no impact on  median
