Lichen is highly sensitive to air pollution and it dies off rapidly in dirty air. It acts as an indicator by not being there in polluted atmospheres.

The following reasons in support of the given statement:

1. Lichens are sensitive to Sulphur Dioxide (SO₂) and thus they do not grow in the areas that are polluted.

2. They are highly sensitive to air pollution therefore, it one tries to grow them in a polluted environment it dies off rapidly in polluted air.
