Lichens are important in the studies on atmospheric pollution because they are very sensitive to pollutants like sulphur dioxide.

Lichens enable algae to live and adapt themselves in different climatic conditions.

They also provide a means to convert carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through photosynthesis into oxygen which is important for us to survive.
