Both LiCl and NaCl ought to be ionic compounds but LiCl is covalent but NaCl is ionic. This is because of the small size of cation and large size of anion in LiCl. ... Since covalency of a compound is directly proportional to the polarising power of the cation and polarisability of anion, LiCl is covalent.

Covalent and ionic character is decided on the basis of the difference in the electronegativity..

If the difference is 1.7 , the bond is 50% ionic and 50% covalent..

If the difference is greater than 1.7 there is an ionic character while there is a covalent character if the difference is less than 1.7..

In LiCl the difference is less than 1.7 hence is covalent while NaCl is ionic..

Hope it helps you

mundadaaruna: This can also be proved by fajans rule
mundadaaruna: Small cation and large anion
mundadaaruna: Therefore their is covalent character in an ionic bond
